3 Steps to Decluttering Your Life With the Full Focus System

“I haven’t seen you in forever. We should get together soon!”

How often have you had this conversation with a friend you ran into at a birthday party or going for a jog in the park? It’s been months since you’ve seen one another and, unfortunately, it’s looking like it might be a few more months before your next chance encounter. Life is just too busy. You have too many things on your plate to schedule intentional time with everyone.

The Full Focus System helps you achieve your goals—financial goals, professional goals, life goals—but all too often we overlook its ability to help us simply declutter our lives; to create order in the chaos and make time for the things that matter—like grabbing coffee with a good friend.

Not every goal has to be monumental. It’s certainly good to set those kinds of goals. We all dream big, and we want the Full Focus System to help us achieve our loftiest goals. But what about the goal of reconnecting with friends? The goal of having more time to spend with family?

Life can be complicated. But with a few steps, you can use the Full Focus System to simplify it and free up valuable time to achieve a true Double Win.

Step 1. Look Back

Think back to a time in your life when things were simpler. What’s changed?

If you’re like most people, it’s hard to identify a true turning point. It’s likely you simply took on more personal and professional responsibilities along the way. Priorities changed. Life happened.

But why can’t things just be simpler, like they used to be?

The first step to achieving any goal is to recognize what that goal is. To put a name to it. To acknowledge the need for that goal. That’s the crux of the Full Focus System, and it should be your starting point in decluttering your life. First, you need to envision what your life was like before things got so hectic and realize your desire to clear a path to less clutter.

Step 2. Look Ahead

You’ve already given some thought to what life used to be like. Now think forward to what you want your life to look like. What’s different?

Every goal begins with understanding what the goal actually is. What do you want? How do you go about getting it?

The Full Focus System offers plenty of tools to help you reach your destination, starting with the Goal Detail pages. You can also use the Ideal Week to preserve time to work on your goals, and you can use your Weekly Big 3 and Daily Big 3 to start implementing changes to reach your goals.

It’s easy to overload our schedules with tasks and appointments we deem necessary or even crucial, only to realize in hindsight that some of the things that cluttered our lives weren’t actually all that important. That’s where the next step comes in.

Step 3. Look Around

If you’ve ever watched any one of the increasingly popular survival shows on TV, you know the very first step to finding your way out of the wilderness is to survey your surroundings; to climb to a high vantage point to see what’s around you and where you need to go to get to civilization.

Sometimes we should do that in our lives as well. When life has us boxed in and we can’t see what’s around us, we need to climb a tall tree and simply look around—to identify the path we want to take and to understand what’s blocking our way.

The Full Focus System can help you do that, too. Take the seven-day calendar in the Weekly Preview pages of the Full Focus Planner, for instance. If your calendar is stacked with commitments, appointments, and errands, you’re likely feeling lost in the woods.

Now compare your calendar to your Ideal Week. How are they different? Recognizing the chasm between your actual week and your Ideal Week is like climbing to the top of the mountain. You can now see where it is you need to go and the clearest path to get there.

You can’t control everything in life, but you have more control than you realize. The Full Focus System helps you take control by understanding your vision, aligning your goals and habits with that vision and executing a plan, every day, to escape the jungle of clutter and overcommitment to achieve your goals.
